Where is Karangasem Water Palace Bali?

Just like its name, Puri Agung Karangasem lies right at Karangasem Regency at the Eastern part of Bali. Despite being small, Karangasem carries both natural beauty and cultural charm at once.

The most ideal way to get to Puri Agung Karangasem is by car. So, it's best to rent your own vehicle or use ride-hailing apps such as Go-Jek and Grab to get around. Another alternative is to get the Karangasem tour packages from your hotel or travel agents.

The trip duration may vary, depending on your starting point. It typically takes 2 hours from Bali's crowd centres such as Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, or Ubud. If you want to cut the travel time, you can also stay at various accommodations available near the palace.

Karangasem Palace History

Made in the 19th century, Puri Agung Karangasem stands up roughly two centuries after the rise of the Karangasem kingdom itself. It was built by the then-reigning king, then renovated by his successor.

The architecture and design of Puri Agung Karangasem are widely praised. The eye-catching blend of European, Balinese, and Chinese element designs symbolises the relationship between the king and Karangasem's foreign traders.

After the Indonesian independence declaration in 1945, the kingdoms of Bali were dispersed and fused into a democratic governance. Even so, the descendants of Karangasem's royals are still taking care of the palace until now.

What's Interesting at the Puri Agung Karangasem?

As a royal chateau, Puri Agung Karangasem serves various functions. Aside from being the centre of government, it's also a place to hold rituals, greet guests, and is the main residence of the royal family.

Meanwhile, the palace now serves as a tourist spot which consists of gardens, ponds, a floating gazebo, and a museum. In addition to that, you can also rent the area to hold a Karangasem Palace wedding.

Puri Agung Karangasem opens its gate daily from 6 AM to 9 PM. You'll be able to see all areas of Puri Agung Karamasem, which are;

  • Paduraksa: A pagoda-like gate that symbolises protection from evil.
  • Bencingah: The middle area and main yard of the palace. It serves as a place to greet guests and hold cultural art performances.
  • Jaba Tengeh: Connecting the main yard to the main residence, Jaba Tengeh is an area of the garden and a large pond.  It's often used as the royal family's meeting and dining place.
  • Maskerdam or Saren Agung: It’s the residential area of the palace. It also serves as a meeting place for important figures and a place to hold sacred rituals and prayers.
